Sutro Footwear — Inspired by Tradition

Styled Brand Photography for Sutro Footwear —

Sutro Footwear specializes in classic, high-quality leather styles, handmade in Mexico.

When I saw these two pairs from Sutro, the Ocean in Black and the Polk in Honey, I knew I wanted to play with a balance of masculine and feminine elements. Although these are labeled as women’s styles, everything Sutro makes is beautifully androgynous. Working with a simple color palette of white, black, warm brown, and a hint of bright red, I sought out pieces that were airy, yet formal. Both outfits have a creamy white base layer, contrasted with darker vintage pieces.
In my continuing effort to style shoots sustainably, I was able to source almost everything secondhand; the only items I purchased new were the beret and some of the jewelry. As for locations, I scouted spots that had a timeless feel, inspired by Sutro’s modern interpretation of traditional styles. Portland has an abundance of these neoclassical buildings with ornate facades and bronze signs, and it’s fairly easy to find plenty of angles without any modern bits like traffic lights and the MAX train.
